Google Maps is one of the richest, most current sources of local business data there is. Every trading business wants to be found on it, so they keep their listing reasonably up to date: name, location, category, phone, website, hours, ratings. For a small agency or freelancer looking for local clients, that is a goldmine, if you know how to turn listings into leads without drowning in manual work.
Big contact databases sell you millions of records, but they go stale and skew toward large companies. Map listings are different: they are live, and they capture the millions of small, local, owner-run businesses that never appear in corporate databases, exactly the businesses a small agency can realistically win and serve. The data reflects who is open and trading today, not who was in a database two years ago.
The DIY approach is to search a category and area on the map, then open each result, copy the name, phone, and website into a spreadsheet, check whether they look like a fit, and move on. It works, but it is slow and soul-destroying, and most people burn out after a page or two. Scraping tools speed up the copying but hand you a raw CSV with no qualification and no way to reach out, you still have to figure out who is worth contacting and write every message yourself.
The workflow that actually scales has four steps, and the key is that qualification and outreach are built in, not bolted on afterwards:
Use public business information for legitimate outreach, and respect the basics: honor unsubscribe requests, follow local marketing and data rules (such as GDPR if you are in or contacting the UK/EU), and reach out with genuine relevance rather than volume. Targeted, personalized outreach to businesses that clearly fit is both more effective and more defensible than mass blasting.
Reachlist turns live business listings into qualified leads in one place: search by city and industry, see the buying signals on each result, get a personalized email (plus WhatsApp, LinkedIn, and Instagram versions) written for each business, and track every deal from first contact to close. It is the four-step workflow above, without the spreadsheet and without the blank page.
